La misión del Instituto de Ciencias Naturales es el estudio sistemático del suelo patrio y de sus elementos y producciones naturales, con arreglo a las normas modernas de la Botánica, la Zoología y la Geología, y contribuir al adelanto de estas ciencias y de sus diversas ramas de aplicación en Colombia, metodizando la enseñanza universitaria de las mismas y promoviendo la formación de un personal idóneo dedicado a la investigación especializada en eI campo de las ciencias naturales.
