Según el colector, el nombre vulgar de esta palma es matamba. Otra especie de Desmoncus, conocida también vulgarmente con el nombre de matamba, se encuentra en el Bajo Magdalena y la región litoral caribe de Colombia; es D. horridus Splitg. ex Mart., que se distingue de D. myriacanthos por tener los segmentos foliáceos mucho más anchos, casi elípticos, el raquis de las frondas menos aguijoneado y los aguijones más largos. De D. horridus he examinado Dugand.
