La separación por especies de las pequeñas formas del género Membracis, se puede verificar únicamente según el dibujo del apéndice pronotal. Porque todos los demás caracteres usados por autores son inconstantes y solamente podrían ser usados como caracteres después de varios días de vida del adulto y si se cuenta con las influencias ambientales.  Los insectos coleccionados, sin ser minuciosamente limpiados y sin conocer su edad, no deben usarse para fijar ciertos caracteres como sistemáticos. Así, casi todas las formas del género Enchenopa pueden alimentarse de distintas especies de Vismia o de Eupatorium.  La primera planta, Vismia, esta cubierta por secreciones granulosas de color rojizo.
