In Ernodesmis verticillata (Kützing ) B¢rgesen and Struvea anastomosans (Harvey) Piccone & Grunow in Piccone cultures carried out under laboratory conditions, mainly at temperatures lower than those occurring normally at the collection site (coast near Cartagena, Colombia) the formation of propagula (exogenous aplanospores) was observed. The propagulum formation is considered as an answer to extreme conditions. The propagulum production permits a vegetative reproduction of the algae without the loss of cells of the mother thallus as it happens by the formation of zoospores or endogenous aplanospores.
