The genus Brassavola belongs to the subtribe Laeliinae (Orchidaceae); grows in lowlands from Mexico to northern Argentina. The similarity of vegetative and floral plants has hampered the delimitation of its species. In this study it was analyzed the systematics of Brassavola using morphological characters. The methodology employed consisted in the inspection of herbarium and living material, and as well as a review of the specialized botanical literature. As a result of the taxonomic treatment, fourteen of Brassavola species were recognized, these can be easily differentiated based on floral morphological characters of the lip and column.
