Lichens are important components in high Andean ecosystems; however, their communities have been poorly investigated. The objective of the study is to make known the lichen richness and its distribution in the paramos of Ecuador, taking as reference the collection of the National Herbarium of Ecuador (QCNE), therefore historical records of lichens by provinces and altitudinal range were analyzed. 54 species were recorded and the most representative genera are Usnea and Cladonia. The provinces with more species are Azuay and Carchi, and the best-represented altitudinal range is between 3521-3727 m. alt. This report that considers historical heritage, motivates to expand the information of the lichen studies in Ecuador, whose specimens rest in scientific collections.
