In this article we propose to define and explain the Colombian Caribbean as a historical region, from the confluence of three approaches or perspectives of analysis: First, the beginning and trends of regional historiography is briefly discussed. This allows us to examine the features of the theoretical and methodological elaborations which have made the Colombian Caribbean an object of study at the regional and national level. Second, some conceptions of the past in certain characteristic inhabitants of the Caribbean will be discussed, in this case those from San Andrés islands, from some indigenous cultures and from San Basilio de Palenque. Thus, it seeks to interpret and establish what the sense of the past is in a representative sample of residents of the Colombian continental and insular Caribbean, what their historical perception is, what they consider as their history, and what they describe as the history of the Caribbean region. Finally, an analysis of the historical construction of the Colombian Caribbean as a region assembled through the nation-state and therefore framed and inserted in a national context will be provided; showing the evolution of their spaces and events in time, in association with environmental, geographic, social, political, economic and cultural factors.
