Investment in tourism has been identified as a strategy for economic development in many poor countries and regions. But to what extent the resource generated by tourism is effectively translated into improvements in the quality of life of the inhabitants of these tourist areas, is one of the issues addressed in this article. It describes the characteristics of tourism that occurs in the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina (Colombia) the Colombian region most dependent on tourism. The differential factors of tourism within this insular territory are also identified, in order to explain why the island of Providencia, which receives significantly fewer tourists than San Andrés, has better social performance indexes.
