In 1594, the governor of Guatemala received a special request from Philip II. The king wanted to know more about La Taguzgalpa resources and, above all, he wanted to know who its inhabitants were. Reports from the expeditions of Callejo and Captain Diego Gutiérrez carried out between 1584 and 1589, created a series of legends about the people of La Taguzgalpa; a mixture of fact and fiction. Three important topics are remarkable in the documents generated: the aggressiveness of its inhabitants, the blackness of its inhabitants, and finally, the extensive smuggling network running from the Caribbean to the underworld of the Spanish Central America. This condition led the Mosquitia zambos to become one more of the actors within the dynamic caribbean trade routes.
