William Dugger cuestiona la idea convencional de que la desigualdad es necesaria para el desarrollo económico, mediante el examen histórico e institucional de cinco de los principales sistemas de desigualdad existentes en la actualidad: el racismo, el sexismo, el clasismo, el chovinismo y el antisemitismo. Expone diversas razones para justificar que la redistribución no es la solución, que la desigualdad es patológica, acumulativa y social; que se apoya en el mito y que la actual doctrina económica es un sistema mitológico quq preserva el status quo y confunde la actual economía de codicia y envidias colectivas -basada en el poder de las grandes corporaciones- con una economía de iniciativa individual, eficiente y mercados competitivos. Y muestra que el laissez faire es impracticable porque el Estado siempre actua, aún cuando siga políticas económicas no intervencionistas. En contra del simplismo de quienes defienden la disyunción 'Estado o mercado'. En cuanto a la desigualdad, resume así el problema central de nuestra época: ¿Cuánta desigualdad creará y permitirá el Estado para preservar la estructura de mercado?
William Dugger questions the conventional idea that inequality is necessary for economic development through a historical and institutional examination of five of the major systems of inequality currently existing: racism, sexism, classism, jingoism, and antisemitismo It puts forward various reasons to justify that redistribution is not the solution; that inequality is pathological, cumula tive, and social; that it rests on myth and that current economic doctrine is a mythological
system which preserves the status quo and confuses the current economy of collective greed and en based on the power of the large corporations- with an economy of individual initiative, efficiency, and competitive markets. And it shows that laissez faire is impractical because the State always ect:s, even when it follows non-interventionist economic policies. Against the oversimplification of those who defend the dichotomy 'State or market', it opposes the old institutionalist conjunction 'State and market'. As for inequality, it summarizes as follows the central question of our age: "how much inequali ty will the State create and allow in order to preserve the structure of the market system?"
