The analysis of flow velocities in open channels is fundamental in experimental and applied hydraulics. Traditionally, such measurements have been carried out using instruments such as current meters, floaters, or electromagnetic devices, which, although reliable, present limitations in terms of resolution. In this study, PIVlab, an image-processing software based on the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, was applied to obtain the mean surface velocity in a laboratory channel. The experimental results confirmed that the mean flow velocity increases with the hydraulic slope. Among the measurement methods evaluated, the floater showed the highest relative errors and a tendency to overestimate velocity, the current meter presented intermediate performance with good agreement, and PIVlab demonstrated good accuracy, with the lowest MAE, bias, and the highest R2. Overall, the comparison confirms that although traditional methods are useful and easy to apply, optical techniques such as PIVlab represent an additional reliable and non-intrusive alternative for experimental studies in open channels.
