Sabemos que un punto del espacio queda completamente determinado cuando conocemos sus tres coordenadas X, Y, Z, con respecto a un sistema cartesiano, previamente establecido. Y vemos claramente que para fijar un hecho o fenómeno físico necesitamos además conocer el tiempo en que sucedió.
Supongamos ahora que observamos un mismo fenómeno desde un sistema inmóvil y desde un sistema dotado de movimiento rectilíneo uniforme y queremos saber por medio de qué relaciones entre las coordenadas y los tiempos podemos trasladar los resultados de nuestras observaciones de un sistema a otro.
