El oro es el único metal que tiene color amarillo, cuando está puro y en estado nativo. Las impurezas le modifican notablemente el color, la plata le merma el amarillo, en tanto que el cobre se lo aumenta. Cuando está finamente dividido toma otros matices: violeta, carmín, púrpura, siena oscuro o negro.
Maleabilidad y ductilidad.—En maleabilidad y en ductilidad el oro excede a los demás metales. Se han obtenido hojas de espesor no mayor de 1/300.000 de pulgada, y un solo grano (0.0648 gramos) ha podido convertirse en un alambre de 500 pies de longitud. El Pb, y el Bi y el Te en cantidades aún inferiores al 0.1%, vuelven el oro quebradizo. El Bi aún en un contenido de 0.05% lo hace tan quebradizo, que se puede triturar con los dedos.
