Geotechnical back-analysis in tunneling makes use of real-time construction data to refine design parameters, enhancing the understanding of geomechanical conditions and optimizing excavation procedures. This study demonstrates a relatively simple and effective back-analysis method using rock laboratory tests, rock mass surveys and displacement monitoring of the rock wall measured during construction of two parallel highway tunnels, in order to determine the best-fitting pair (optimization) of the stress ratio (k) and the rock mass elastic modulus (E) associated with real displacements on the tunnel boundary. The stress ratio (k) is defined as the horizontal-to-vertical induced stress components. In situ stress tests were not performed for the tunnel construction. The Santa Elena Tunnels is part of the Conexión Túnel Aburrá-Oriente, located between Medellín district and the José María Córdova international airport. Rock mass convergence was measured during construction in five different sections of both parallel tunnels at various times and distances using total stations. The measurement uncertainty is on the order of ±0.1 mm, due to the inherent error of the instrument. The deformation of Tunnel 1 was analyzed in response to the excavation progress of Tunnel 2. The methodology is based on the Root Mean Square Error or RMSE, which tests various combinations of k and E modelled by numerical simulations, searching for absolute errors less than 1.5 mm between modelled and monitoring results. The method identified optimal parameters by matching recorded contour displacement data: an elastic rock mass modulus of 19 GPa and a horizontal to vertically induced stress ratio of 1.25. It was observed that the deformation of the tunnel rock mass is significantly more sensitive to the deformation modulus than the stress ratio.
