Special Issue: Celebrating 140 Years of the International Statistical Institute – Advances in Theory and Applications

The International Statistical Institute (ISI) has played a central role in advancing the development, dissemination, and application of statistics worldwide, particularly in Latin America and Caribbean. Founded in 1885, ISI has a long tradition of promoting excellence in statistical research, fostering collaborations among academics, practitioners, and policymakers. Throughout its 140-year history, the Institute has continually supported the growth of statistical science through its journals, conferences, and specialized societies. Its flagship event, the World Statistical Congress, has become a prominent forum for exchanging ideas and presenting cutting-edge statistical methodologies across disciplines and regions.

Over the years, ISI has particularly contributed to strengthening the statistical community in Latin America and Caribbean, facilitating collaborations between institutions and promoting high-quality research. By connecting statisticians from diverse fields and fostering interdisciplinary approaches, ISI has been instrumental in translating theoretical advances into impactful applications in public health, economics, environmental sciences, and other fields.

In recognition of this remarkable legacy, the Revista Colombiana de Estadística is pleased to announce a special issue dedicated to celebrating the ISI's 140th anniversary. This issue seeks to highlight the contributions of the global statistical community, with a particular emphasis on advances in theoretical and applied statistics that reflect the diversity, relevance, and transformative power of our discipline. We welcome submissions from researchers worldwide who present new methodologies, innovative applications, and interdisciplinary approaches in keeping with the spirit of the ISI. By bringing together a collection of high-quality contributions, this special issue aims to honor the Institute's history while also looking ahead to future developments that will continue to shape the field of statistics in the years to come.

  • New section: “Applied Statistics”

    2019-06-04

The section of applied statistics covers the whole range of interdisciplinary fields, for example applications of statistical methods as well as data analytics in agriculture, genetics, industry, medicine, economy and physical sciences. In this section, original or innovative applications that make a novel contribution to statistics by adapting or developing methodology, or by applying it for the first time in a field will be considered.

It is important that the applied statistics section criteria of novelty are met. Either because a new method is used, adapted or applied for the first time. Moreover, real data (not only simulated data) should be used.

  • Theoretical section

    2019-06-03
The theoretical section publishes original articles of theoretical, methodological and educational kind in any branch of Statistics. Purely theoretical papers should include illustration of the techniques presented with real data or at least simulation experiments in order to verify the usefulness of the contents presented. Informative articles of high quality methodologies or statistical techniques applied in different fields of knowledge are also considered. Read more about Theoretical section
