In a recent book, Maurizio Viroli argues that in The Prince Machiavelli delineates the image of the founder that Republican political theory needs, which receives its paradigmatic incarnation in Moses and his actions. Here I propose that for an adequate understanding of Machiavelli's Moses, the interpretation he offers of the golden calf incident (Discourses III, 30), which he interprets as a revolt against Moses motivated by envy, is key. This episode, I argue, exemplifies the neccesary actions to secure the institutions of a newly constituted free state in the context of the permanent conflict between the great and the people.
