The purpose of this work was to conduct a morphometric study of the exploratory atlanto-occipital joint, with a sample of 9 skeletonized corpses, from the collection of human skeletal remains of the Laboratory of Physical Anthropology of National University of Colombia.  7 measures were taken in each structure, the shape of the joint surfaces were evaluated, and traces with transparent adhesive tape of the joint surfaces were made to assess congruence. The results showed that the predominant form of the atlas is the form of "8" and in the condylo the "deformed". The correspondence between the forms of joint and occcythal condyles barely exceeds 40% of cases. It is concluded that the surfaces of both structures are not symmetrical, and it is proposed in this research that the assessment of the congruence between the joint surface of the atlas and the condyle, should focus on comparing their edges rather than the total area, than the form of these, is the result of the natural movements of the joint, and that is in them, where you see the congruence.
