Vesicles are structures composed of a lipid bilayer that separates them from the medium forming anucleated compartments. They are derived from a cell membrane or an intracellular organelle. They are important elements in numerous internal and external cellular processes (1). Their role in cellular communication is the subject of arduous research as they are potential biomarkers and therapeutic strategies. The aim of this paper is to briefly comment on the current nomenclature, historical milestones, characteristics and main methods of extraction of exosomes in order to disclose their structural complexity and the way in which they are studied in a laboratory
