Backyard poultry farming is essential to food security and the local economy in Colombia. However, the lack of specific epidemiological data regarding their health status creates uncertainty regarding the health status of the national backyard poultry population. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in backyard poultry (Gallus gallus domesticus) in the rural district (vereda) of Panamá, municipality of Anapoima, Cundinamarca. A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was conducted across three rural farms, evaluating a total of 76 birds. A probabilistic random sampling method was used. Fresh fecal samples were collected from protected surfaces to prevent environmental contamination. The samples were analyzed using the modified McMaster coproparasitological concentration technique using light microscopy (10× and 40×) for the morphological identification of helminth eggs and protozoan oocysts. Statistical analysis was performed using frequency tables, and the chi-square test was applied to evaluate differences in prevalence among the farms. Eight parasitic genera were identified in the evaluated birds. The highest prevalences were observed for Eimeria spp. (78.9%) and Capillaria spp. (71.1%), followed by Isospora spp. (36.8%), Trichostrongylus spp. (26.3%), Ascaridia spp. (6.6%), Raillietina spp. (5.3%), Amidostomum spp. (1.3%), and Heterakis spp. (1.3%). These results confirm the sanitary vulnerability of backyard production systems and provide baseline data to guide health management strategies aimed at mitigating the productive impact on local smallholders.
