WILL and AKRASIA

En los capítulos 1-10 del libro VII de la Ética a Nicómaco se lleva a cabo la investigación acerca de estados o disposiciones de carácter moral que difieren de la virtud y el vicio y se sitúan entre ambos. En contra de la posición platónica, Aristóteles defiende la posibilidad de una disposición en que la posesión del conocimiento de lo correcto por parte de un agente no implica el correcto obrar. La disociación de conocimiento y práctica hace surgir dos preguntas a responder para justificar la akrasia: (i) ¿qué tipo de conocimiento tiene el incontinente que le permite actuar de manera distinta a lo que conoce?; (ii) ¿cómo puede el incontinente actuar en contra de su conocimiento? El presente texto se ocupará de ambas preguntas haciendo, en primer lugar, una caracterización de la akrasia resaltando el papel de la posible respuesta a la pregunta epistemológica –(i)– para después exponer las razones que llevan a plantear la necesidad de la existencia de un rasgo práctico en la incontinencia, a saber, la voluntad.

The first ten chapters of the seventh book of the Ethica Nicomachea are dedicated to the investigation of states or dispositions of moral character that in some degree differ from virtuc and vice and are placed in berween the two. To contrast with a platonic view, Aristotle defends the possibiliyyof a disposition in which the possession of knowledge of what is correct does not imply acting correctly. The dissociation of knowledge and practice brings forth two questions
to be answered in order to justify akrasia: (i) what kind of knowledgeis possessed by the akratic that permits him to act differently from his knowledge?; and (ii) how can the akratic act againsthis knowledge?.
