Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed is a book filled with deliberate contradictions geared towards the protection of its esoteric message from the unprepared. The following essay will focus on the most famous of these contradictions: the need of simultaneously assuming the eternity of the world to demonstrate the existence of God and the Scriptural claim of the creation of the universe. Through an analysis of the different presentations of the opposition between the dialectical endoxa involved and the different distracting artifices used by Maimonides, this essay attempts to show that the contradiction is non-existent. However, its introduction in the structure of the argument serves as an important heuristic tool to discover Maimonides’ true views on creation and on God.
