There are two feasible interpretations of
Timaeus’ notion of space which seem to be incompatible: as a ‘receptacle’ which distinguishes
itself from its contents and as ‘underlying substratum’ like the prime matter of sensible
objects. In this paper I shall argue that it turns out that both interpretations are necessary
according to the cosmological design Timaeus sketches in his speech. Moreover, both could
be advocated together if we take them as two 'powers' through which the ‘third kind’ reveals
its nature. Each interpretation explains fundamental characteristics of the third kind such
as its different gender quality which allows it to hold things and the active role that it plays
in the generation of objects. The latter allows us to shed some light on the problem of the
identity of objects.
