Emotions, altruism and natural selection

En este ensayo, mostraré cómo el comportamiento moral motivado por cierto tipo de emociones pudo haber evolucionado. Mi exposición tiene tres partes. Primero, explico la naturaleza paradójica del comportamiento altruista. Segundo, abordo una solución a la paradoja basada en la reciprocidad (altruismo recíproco). Por último, basado en investigaciones de Robert Trivers y Robert Frank, aplico esta idea al caso del comportamiento humano. Se concluirá que esto es posible porque la presencia de las emociones morales, que motivan el comportamiento altruista, se explica por los beneficios que tales emociones reportan al individuo que las siente.

In this essay, I will show how moral behavior motivated by certain types of emotions could have evolved. My exposition has three parts. First, I explain the paradoxical nature of altruistic behavior. Second, I address a solution to the paradox based on reciprocity (reciprocal altruism). Finally, based on research by Robert Trivers and Robert Frank, I apply this idea to the case of human behavior. It will be concluded that this is possible because the presence of moral emotions, which motivate altruistic behavior, is explained by the benefits that such emotions bring to the individual who feels them.
