The Problem of the Human Being as Substance in Thomas Aquinas

El problema que se va a analizar en este ensayo es el de si, de acuerdo con la doctrina tomista, el alma humana mientras está unida al cuerpo de alguna manera es una substancia, o si lo único que puede ser llamado así es el compuesto de alma y cuerpo. Se plantean básicamente dos teorías al respecto; la primera consiste en afirmar que la unión entre alma y cuerpo es la de dos entidades no substanciales que se constituyen como tal en el ser humano. La segunda afirma que la unión entre los mismos es la de dos substancias incompletas que se convierten en una completa. Lo que se pretende mostrar es que la teoría de Tomás no admite un punto de vista dualista sino que, por el contrario, para entender a cabalidad su postura es fundamental comprender que sólo cuando se habla de un cuerpo vivo en el ser humano se hace referencia a substancia.

The problem to be analyzed in this essay is whether, according to Thomistic doctrine, the human soul while it is united to the body in some way is a substance, or whether the only thing that can be so called is the compound of soul and body. Basically two theories are put forward in this regard; the first consists in affirming that the union between soul and body is that of two non-substantial entities that are constituted as such in the human being. The second affirms that the union between them is that of two incomplete substances that become a complete one. What we intend to show is that Thomas' theory does not admit a dualistic point of view but, on the contrary, to fully understand his position it is fundamental to understand that only when we speak of a living body in the human being is reference made to substance.
