This paper presents an efficient method for computing the critical areas corresponding to different operating points in the load parameter space. These points are evaluated at the base case and at the maximum loading point for different directions of load increase, a direction of load increase for constant power factor and the subsequent directions until the worst direction of load increase is found. This worst direction of load increase corresponds to the minimum voltage stability margin. As the load increases, the power system may operate in an emergency state, so system operators have to take control actions such as power re-scheduling, reactive power compensation or load shedding to move the system to a securer operating point. The critical areas are related to the weakest areas or buses of the network. The identification of these critical areas allows the operator choosing the most suited control actions for avoiding emergency situations or voltage collapse. Results for several IEEE systems are shown and compared in different situations
