Software tool for the designing of the shielding against direct lightning strokes in electrical substations

This paper presents the technical foundation for the shielding design against direct strokes in high and extra high voltage electrical substations through a software tool developed in MatLab.  The tool lets the user to tackle a typical problem of the electrical engineering in the substations and to pose technical options of solution using the electro-geometric model for the substation’s yards through a methodology that lets to enter the needed information to carry out the respective analysis and to deliver to the user reliable results that lets to set up the number of shield wires and the height of their installation for an effective shielding.
