In Colombia, in 2014, the national government made the 1715 law with the aim of integrating unconventional energy matrix. One of the most attractive alternatives is the photovoltaic solar energy, since the country has a great potential solar. Moreover, the prices of this technology have been decreasing year after year and due to that applications can be developed on a very small scale as in the case of residential facilities.
Therefore, this article reviews regulation and Colombian standards relating to the implementation of photovoltaic facilities and compares them with other countries, identifying aspects to improve. Likewise, the financial viability of this type of residential facility is analyzed. The study shows that with the current technology prices the investment in this type of facilities at a very small scale is still unattractive. Thus, incentives covered by 1715 law for this type of projects play an important role. In the same way, regulations in force in Colombia requires an urgent update so that, the safe implementation of photovoltaic generation can be achieved at the residential level and its adequate interaction with the conventional electrical distribution network can be guaranteed.
