This work evaluates, through a case study of a regional transmission system of the country, the potential of increase of capability that would have the use of the dynamic thermal rating, DTR. In the first part, the traditional (conservative) procedures and criteria used in the design of transmission lines and the background and successful experiences of DTR are reviewed worldwide. The work continues proposing alternative schemes, of dynamic thermal rating, that integrate sotfware, communications and technologies for the capture of electromechanical and meteorological variables applicable to the country's transmission sector. After identifying the best scheme, the work continues with the focus on the application of the conductor thermal model (IEEE Standard 738) [1] for a 115kV transmission line of a regional system of the center of the country. In the final part, a baseline or reference case is define and operational scenarios (with changes in meteorological variables) are proposed in order to execute simulations with the thermal model and to identify the potential of increase that could be achieved, for this line, with the use of these new technologies.
