This This article presents a description of the centralized electrical metering system developed by the Universidad Industrial de Santander (U.I.S.) and the company Electrificadora de Santander (E.S.S.A. S.A. E.S.P.) with the goal of detect, decrease and track the energy losses produced by manipulation of energy meters and distribution networks. The system was designed and implemented with the new smart metering’s schemes as of concepts about advanced metering infrastructure(AMI) and adapted to ESSA's needs.

 The centralized metering system can track the energy consumption in real time, check the meter status, tamper detection and manage the connection of customers to the electricity service. This paper presents the main characteristic of the ESSA-UIS centralized metering system and the impact in the culture about the responsible use of energy; in the same way, it presents others products and guidelines as a result of this development.
