This paper presents the conclusions of a theoreticalexperimental comparison (laboratory tests and industrial plant metering) referred to variable frequency drives (VFD’s), considering the modeling of their constituent parts, their effects over the electric systems and the possible solutions to the problems that their utilization involve, showing also an harmonic mitigation proposal using active filters. For the modeling and system analysis, the PSCAD/EMTDC and ETAP software’s were respectively used, presenting their potentialities and limitations with the aim of validating them as tools for the analysis of VFD’s applications.
