As a result of fossil fuel usage, the emission of greenhouse gases is considered a global issue. However, in recent years, the interest in implementing distributed energy resources (DER) is increased, mainly aimed to reduce the adverse effects of thermal power plants. Usually, DERs are connected to the distribution networks where several problems in the protection systems have to be considered. This paper presents a comparative analysis of a conventional protection scheme and several adaptive protection schemes for active distribution systems (ADN), con- sidering overcurrent relays. The results obtained by considering different faults and operating modes of the ADN demonstrate that the conventional protection coordination scheme is highly vulnerable to malfunction when DERs are connected, mainly due to the change in the magnitudes and direction of currents. The analyzed adaptive schemes have an adequate performance; however, some application issues must be deeply analyzed.
