Objective: To analyze the perceptions of male nursing students about being a nurse.
Content synthesis: A document analysis of grey literature was conducted in February 2025, across five databases. Articles published in the last five years, available in full in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, were included. The sample consisted of 13 articles. The Dialectical Structural Model of Care was adopted as the theoretical framework. Data were analyzed using Content Analysis and the Dialectical Structural Model of Care. Two categories emerged: “Unfavorable configurations for the construction of the professional identity of being a nurse” and “Positive aspects for the construction of the professional identity of being nurse”. The first category highlights aspects that negatively influence the construction of male nurses’ professional identity, including social image, gender discrimination, and deficits in professional identity. The second category offers an optimistic perspective on the construction of a professional identity for male nurses, emphasizing the advantages of the profession, supportive family factors, and prior caregiving experiences.
Conclusions: The perceptions of male nursing students encompassed both positive and negative perspectives, contributing to the theoretical and practical implications of
the study, aiming to guide political and pedagogical proposals that foster the empowerment, inclusion, and the increased participation of men in the nursing profession.
