Durante el siglo XIX, España (especialmente Andalucía) se convirtió en el destino por excelencia de cualquier viajero. Aunque hay estudios extensos de viajeros angloparlantes y de Europa Central, pocos trabajos han analizado la experiencia de los viajeros latinoamericanos. Escritores como la colombiana Soledad Acosta de Samper o el político chileno Rafael Sanhueza Lizardi describen en sus memorias sus impresiones de España. Estas estaban condicionadas por su relación con la antigua metrópoli, su visión del pasado islámico de España, la falta de contacto con los espacios orientales y su visión del mito oriental.
During the nineteenth century, Spain (particularly Andalusia) became the quintessential destination for any traveler.
Although there are extensive studies about English speaking and Central European travelers, only a few have analyzed the experience of Latin American ones. Writers as Colombian Soledad Acosta de Samper or Chilean politician Rafael Sanhueza Lizardi describe in their memoirs their impressions of Spain. Their descriptions were conditioned by their relationship with the former metropolis, their vision of Spain’s Islamic past, their lack of contact with with the ‘Orient’ and its myth.
