This study investigates the development of literary competence in 12 EFL preservice teachers participating in a literature course in Santiago (Chile). The research employs content analysis to identify diverse literary competences within the participants. Findings identify participant strengths in analyzing plot intricacies and character nuances, effectively summarizing events, and understanding complex plot, setting, and character dynamics. A positive learning trajectory was identified, indicating continuous growth in their literary competence. The study underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to EFL teacher education that recognizes picturebooks as invaluable tools for enhancing the literary acumen of future educators, offering a viable means of improving language learning and cultural understanding.
