Serum ioron determination by a colorimetric method and by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry

Serum iron levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and colorimetry (iron-ferene) in thirty clinically healthy nine years old children living in Bogotá. With the spectrometric method, one third of the population displayed serum iron levels lower than 60 m g/dL, whereas with the colorimetric method only one child showed an iron concentration under this level. Since iron deficiency, even when anemia was not present, has been associated with body growth and cognitive alterations, our results support the need of evaluating the techniques that are being used in the Colombian clinical laboratories for the measurement of this micronutrient.
