Desde hace más de cincuenta años es conocida una enfermedad
febril que durante largo tiempo no ha tenido característica distinta de la de presentarse en la isla de Malta y atacar más particularmente las tropas de la guarnición británica. Esta enfermedad se manifiesta con un movimiento febril que puede durar meses y aun años, con períodos de intermitencia, si bien la curva de temperatura presenta ondulaciones cuya existencia ha hecho dar a esta enfermedad el nombre de "fiebre ondulante”, aunque se la conoce también con el nombre de fiebre de Malta, La fiebre ondulante, suficientemente caracterizada en sus manifestaciones clínicas, se manifiesta discreta, solapada" en sus orígenes, propensa a despistar; difícil de sospechar sobre su verdadera naturaleza. Hace apenas cuarenta años que se descubrió que es causada por un germen particular: micrococus melitensis.
