La primera gallina Orpington perteneció a la variedad negra y
fue conseguida por míster Cook, quien residía por entonces en la
población llamada Orpington, de donde vino el nombre a esa raza.
Míster Cook obtuvo ese tipo mediante un cruce entre gallina Plymouth Rocks y gallo Minorca; los productos de esta mezcla fueron cruzados luégo con animales Langshan.
