Las ranillas, actualmente conocidas en el país, son enfermedades infecciosas, febriles, agudas o crónicas que atacan a los bovinos. Son causadas por hematozoarios (parásitos de los glóbulos rojos) a los cuales destruyen. Estos parásitos son transmitidos por diferentes géneros de garrapata .El término genérico de ranilla, bajo el cual se les conoce, comprende tres enfermedades diferentes estudiadas científicamente bajo los nombres de piroplasmosis, babesielosis y anaplasmosis, las cuales pueden considerarse como el «paludismo,» del ganado
