Modelos animales de enfermedades en humanos enteritis por rotavirus

Los Rotavirus causan diarrea en muchas especies: ratón, bovino, hombre, oveja, venado, cerdo, caballo, mono, antílope, impala y conejo. En todas estas especies la enteritis por Rotavirus ocurre más frecuentemente en la vida neonatal y en animales jóvenes; sin embargo se han documentado casos en humanos y en bovinos adultos. La importancia de la Infección cruzada entre especies, no se conoce pero experlmentalmente se han logrado Infecciones en terneros (4), en lechones (8), en corderos (6), y en micos (9), con ei virus humano y también se han producido infecciones experimentales en lechones con el virus de los bovinos (2).

Debido a que la mayoría de los animales adultos tienen anticuerpos contra Rotavirus, los animales recién nacidos pueden obtener anticuerpos en forma pasiva. En forma
experimental es posible obtener terneros, corderos y lechones libres de anticuerpos contra Rotavirus, impidiendo que el recién nacido tenga acceso al calostro. Estos animales privados de calostro se logran preferiblemente, por histerotomía o hlsterectomia, ya que en esta forma los  animales resultan libres de microorganismos del intestino materno. Estos animales deben ser mantenidos en salas muy limpias, o en condiciones gnotoblóticas. Los animales privados de calostro y contaminados con la flora bacteriana materna, sufren a menudo infecciones severas.
