Sobre la ‘dificultad de la realidad’ de Cora Diamond en relación con las obras de ficción

On Cora Diamond's ‘reality difficulty’ in relation to works of fiction.

En el presente texto me propongo explorar la noción de ‘dificultad de la realidad’ planteada por Cora Diamond en su artículo La dificultad de la realidad y la dificultad de la filosofía, desde su relación con las obras de ficción y su potencial de representar la realidad. Parte del reto de este artículo es esclarecer el concepto de ‘dificultad de la realidad’; sin embargo, por ahora propongo entenderla como un tipo de pensamiento que implica una ruptura con los presupuestos más fundamentales que se tienen sobre el mundo y que, por ende, implica una resistencia a ser pensado. Diamond aborda este concepto valiéndose de varios ejemplos, incluyendo el del ‘animal herido’ que hace referencia a las charlas de Coetzee en La vida de los animales. En dicho ejemplo, a través de una obra de ficción, Coetzee representa lo que Diamond identifica como una dificultad de la realidad en el personaje de Elizabeth Costello. Lo que encuentro interesante en Diamond con relación a las obras de ficción es parece no encontrar herramientas en el lenguaje filosófico usual para hablar del ámbito de la realidad al que quiere referirse, por lo que tiene que apoyarse en obras literarias, incluyendo la ficción de Coetzee. Valiéndome del trabajo de Diamond y Coetzee sugeriré que la ficción, entendida como un conjunto de obras que muestran historias de vidas y mundos que no necesitan existir en el universo material, nos provee de un escenario en el que podemos representar la realidad desde el tipo de dificultades que Diamond indica.

My aim in this text is to explore the notion of ‘difficulty of reality’ introduced by Cora Diamond in her article The difficulty of reality and the difficulty of philosophy, in relation to works of fiction and their potential to represent reality. Part of the challenge of this article is to clarify the concept of 'reality difficulty', but for now I would like to understand it as a type of thought that implies a rupture with the most fundamental assumptions about the world, and thus implies a certain resistance from the mind. Diamond approaches this concept using several examples, including the example of the 'wounded animal', referencing Coetzee's lectures, The Lives of Animals. In that example, through a work of fiction, Coetzee represents what Diamond identifies as a difficulty of reality in the character of Elizabeth Costello. What I find interesting about Diamond in relation to works of fiction is that she, it seems, cannot find enough tools in the usual philosophical language to talk about the realm of reality to which she wants to refer to, and therefore must rely on literary works, including Coetzee's fiction. Based on the work of Diamond and Coetzee, I would like to suggest that fiction, understood as works of art that show us stories of lives and worlds that do not need to exist in the material world, provides us with a setting in which we can represent reality as the kind of difficulties that Diamond presents.
