The concept of number : Gottlob Frege's position

“¿Qué cosa es el número ? Una cosa...” El presente ensayo no trata de decidir si el número es una cosa. La pregunta relevante es qué clase de cosa es. ¿Cuál es la naturaleza del número? A este respecto, primero, analizamos dos posibles respuestas desde la posición crítica de Frege: 1) La psicologista 2) La formalista. Después, damos la respuesta del propio Frege: el número es un objeto de tipo lógico (logicismo). Para ilustrar esta última, mostramos la definición del número 0 y la del número 1. Por último, se formula la pregunta de si existe una diferencia importante en la definición de ambos conceptos. ¿El 1 es generado a partir del 0 por la operación de sucesor, o más bien, 1 es la negación de 0?

"What is a number? A thing..." The aim of this paper is not to decide whether a number is a thing or is not. The important question is, rather, what kind of thing a number is? What is the nature of a number? Thus, we will discuss two possible answers: [1] the psychological answer, and [2] the answer of Formalism. Consequently we will supply Frege's answer: the number is a logical object (logicism). In order to illustrate this solution, we will supply Frege's definitions of 0 and 1. Finally, we will lay the question whether there remains a substantial difference between both of them: is 1 generated irom 0 through the immediate successor operation, or rather, is 1 the negation of 0?
