Para hablar de una película como El Abogado del Diablo, es necesario que se tengan claras dos nociones: la de demonio y la de libre albedrío. El primero es un tema recurrente de las religiones, mientras que el segundo es propio de la filosofía moral. Comenzaremos hablando de lo que la tradición cristiana occidental ha entendido por el vocablo «diablo», y luego hablaremos de lo que la filosofía moral entiende por «libre albedrío». Finalmente, veremos cómo se entrelazan ambos temas y cómo sólo a través de ellos se entiende la historia de la película. Excluiremos de este escrito otras visiones que se tengan del demonio en religiones diferentes al cristianismo de occidente. El único motivo para esta limitación se halla en que la visión cristiana del diablo es la que presenta la película.

To talk about a film like The Devil's Advocate, it is necessary to be clear about two notions: that of the devil and that of free will. The first is a recurring theme of religions, while the second is proper to moral philosophy. We will begin by talking about what the Western Christian tradition has understood by the word “devil”, and then we will talk about what moral philosophy understands by “free will”. Finally, we will see how the two themes are intertwined and how it is only through them that the story of the film is understood. We will exclude from this paper other views of the devil held in religions other than Western Christianity. The only reason for this limitation is that the Christian vision of the devil is the one presented in the film.
