The aim of this paper is to reply to Fabio Morales’ article, on the grounds of the doctrine of the mean, as it is spelled out in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. I pretend to examine the circularity Morales claims to have found in Aristotle’s account of voluntary actions, which jeopardizes the possibility of ascribing freedom to such actions. I will contend this view on the grounds of the doctrine of the mean, emphasizing the role that deliberationand choice play in it, thus concluding that despite its posible to share some of Morales’ ideas, there is no such circularity and even though it might be said that Aristotle did not treat in depth the topic of freedom, this concept seems to be safe and sound in his theory.
