Intrinsic teleology in biology: sense making, autopoiesis and adaptability

Al interior de las teorías modernas de la biología, permanece una paradoja acerca del papel de la teleología en este campo de estudio, paradoja cuya solución es central para entender cómo generan o hacen sentido (making sense) los organismos vivientes. Los fenómenos naturales son explicados por la física newtoniana en términos causales-mecánicos, y las explicaciones de la biología, dentro del pensamiento mecanicista, han asumido, de la misma manera, en el reino de lo viviente, la determinación por estas mismas leyes de la física. No obstante, esta explicación parece ser insuficiente para entender cómo cada organismo viviente genera una perspectiva de su entorno. El propósito de este ensayo será presentar un análisis del fenómeno de hacer sentido, apoyado en los textos Life after Kant: Natural Purposes and the  Autopoietic Foundations of Biological Individuality (2002) de Varela y Weber, y Autopoiesis, Adaptativity, Telology, Agency (2005) de Di Paolo, con el fin de argumentar que, para comprender el fenómeno de hacer sentido se requiere una reinterpretación del rol de la teleología en la biología, y además, desde un discurso científico, las condiciones que se requieren para entender este fenómeno son: la autopoiesis –desde una versión reformulada– y la adaptabilidad.

Within modern theories of biology, there remains a paradox about the role of teleology in this field of study, a paradox whose solution is central to understanding how living organisms generate or make sense. Natural phenomena are explained by Newtonian physics in causal-mechanical terms, and explanations of biology, within mechanistic thinking, have assumed, in the same way, in the realm of the living, determination by these same laws of physics. However, this explanation seems to be insufficient to understand how each living organism generates a perspective of its environment. The purpose of this essay will be to present an analysis of the phenomenon of sense-making, supported by the texts Life after Kant: Natural Purposes and the Autopoietic Foundations of Biological Individuality (2002) by Varela and Weber, and Autopoiesis, Adaptativity, Telology, Agency (2005) by Di Paolo, in order to argue that, to understand the phenomenon of sense-making requires a reinterpretation of the role of teleology in biology, and furthermore, from a scientific discourse, the conditions required to understand this phenomenon are: autopoiesis -from a reformulated version- and adaptability.
