This paper presents an analysis of Kalman filter characteristics like signal modeling, measurement modeling and filter frequency response when this algorithm is utilized to track amplitude of fundamental component for voltage sag monitoring and detection purposes. The effect of sag characteristics on different algorithms, including Kalman filtering, is illustrated and a variation on measurement modeling, which looks for improving the algorithm performance, is proposed. This adaptation is supported by analytical arguments and by satisfactory computer simulations results.
