As a consequence of the grow of the electric power systems has resulted in a large increase of the number of lines in operation and their total length. These lines experience faults which are caused by storms, lightning, rain, insulation breakdown and, short circuits caused by birds, vegetation and other external objects. In most cases, electrical faults manifest in mechanical damage, which must be repaired before returning the line to service. The restoration can be expedited if the location of the fault is either known or can be estimated with reasonable accuracy. There are two main approaches to faut location: “Knowledge Based Methods” and “Model Based Methods”. The first ones have a knowledge base which use information from protective devices operation, whether conditions, switch status, customer call reports, SCADAS, etc. Model Based Methods use voltage and currents from one or both line terminals, and the power system model, to compute the apparent impedance from the substation to the fault. The most suitable methods to be applied in power distribution systems are the model based because its implementation and operation is not as expensive as the classical knowledge based methods.  However, the studies related to the fault location problem recognizes the importance of develop hybrid methodologies to take advantage of both, the model based and knowledge based methods. Due to in a distribution substation its is only possible to have voltage and current measurements, it is very important to develop a methodology to extract significative information from the signals and related it to the fault location. This paper deals with the characterization of voltage and currents measured during a fault, based on the transient analysis and autoregressive models (AR models). Using transient analysis it is possible to relate signal characteristics as frequency and time constant to the remainder RLC line parameters and by means of the line model to the fault distance. The estimation of the AR model parameters is performed using the Yule-Walker method, also called the autocorrelation method. It fits a pth order AR model to the windowed input signal, voltage or current, by minimizing the forward prediction error in the least-squares sense.  The extracted characteristics and model parameters are used as training set data of a learning algorithm which help to relate the measurements from the substation to the fault location. The results help to develop strategies to maintain the energy unavailability indexes beneath regulatory requirements. This approach helps both, to speed up the fault location, and identify the weak sections of the power network.
