Objective: To describe the significance of chronicity for the caregiver and the person with a chronic non-communicable disease (CNCD) being cared of.

Materials and methods: An integrative review following Whittemore and Knafl’s proposal was conducted via these steps: identification of the goal or problem, description of research methods, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation of results. A total of 5.798 articles were reviewed, of which 13 remained after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and the quality criteria under the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme in Spanish.

Results: This literature review exposed the following common themes for caregivers and people living with CNCD: living with a chronic disease, limitations  imposed by the disease, adaptation and coping with  the disease, life changes, and care and gender experiences.

Conclusions: Common themes appear among caregivers and the person receiving care in relation to the experiences by this dyad in chronicity. However, there is a gap regarding the conceptualization of the meaning of chronicity caregiver/cared person. Further studies should focus on investigating the meaning of chronicity of caregiver/cared person as an integrating element for nursing interventions.
