En este artículo se realiza una caracterización del proceso de transición paradigmática que se está viviendo en la industria agro-biotecnológica mundial. El resultado principal del análisis realizado señala que la trayectoria de innovación que se viene desplegando en esta industria a partir de la emergencia de la edición génica como innovación fundamental implica un corte relativo respecto de lo ocurrido con la transgénesis vegetal. En el marco de un conjunto de factores de continuidad, emergen elementos de cambio que tienden a promover una reducción de las barreras tecnológicas e institucionales para el desarrollo de nuevos productos. Esta reconfiguración de las condiciones productivas existentes representa, a su vez, una oportunidad para el reposicionamiento de los países que tradicionalmente han jugado un papel subordinado en la dinámica innovativa de esta industria.

In this article, we characterize the process of paradigmatic transition that is taking place in the global agrobiotechnology industry. As a main result, the study shows that the trajectory of innovation that is being deployed in this industry from the emergency of the genetic edition as a fundamental innovation implies a relative cut regarding that of the plant transgenesis. Despite some continuity factors, elements of change are emerging and tend to promote a reduction in the technological and institutional barriers to the development of new products. This reconfiguration of the productive conditions also represents an opportunity for countries that have traditionally played a subordinate role in the industry’s innovative dynamic.

Este artigo caracteriza o processo de transição paradigmática que está ocorrendo no setor global de agrobiotecnologia. O principal resultado da análise realizada indica que a trajetória de inovação que vem se desenvolvendo nesse setor desde o surgimento da edição de genes como uma inovação fundamental implica uma ruptura relativa em relação ao que aconteceu com a transgênese de plantas. Dentro da estrutura de um conjunto de fatores de continuidade, surgem elementos de mudança que tendem a promover uma redução das barreiras tecnológicas e institucionais ao desenvolvimento de novos produtos. Essa reconfiguração das condições de produção existentes representa, por sua vez, uma oportunidade para o reposicionamento dos países que tradicionalmente desempenham um papel subordinado na dinâmica inovadora desse setor.
