About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Mundo Amazónico is a bi-annual, open access journal, with a transnational and multidisciplinary character. It accepts original, unpublished contributions in Spanish, English or Portuguese of authors of any nationality. It targets the academic public of researchers and scholars, and also seeks to reach out to decision makers, professionals and local communities.

The journal publishes contributions with a focus on the diversity and problems of Panamazonia, promoting interdisciplinarity and intercultural dialogue from a wide range of disciplines in the sciences, humanities, arts and traditional and local knowledge. The journal accepts research, review and reflection articles, brief notes and research advances, indigenous texts in their languages, unpublished historical archives and book reviews.

Mundo Amazónico is edited by two academic institutions located in the Amazon basin that seek to create communication links of regional scope: the Instituto Amazónico de Investigaciones IMANI of Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Amazonia Campus, and the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social of Universidade Federal do Amazonas PPGAS/UFAM.

Peer Review Process

The process of evaluation and selection of articles comprises the following phases:

  1. Reception and initial verification: Authors will receive an automatic and immediate confirmation of receipt of their manuscript on the magazine's website. The manuscript is reviewed to verify that it complies with the formal requirements of the journal, indicated in the guidelines for authors, and is submitted to a verification of originality through the program Turnitin. If the manuscript requires formal adjustments, it will be sent back to the author before proceeding.
  2. Review by Associate Editor: For each manuscript an Associate Editor is designated, who determines the quality, relevance and pertinence of the manuscript according to the standards and scope of the journal and decides whether the manuscript is fit to be sent for peer review, or should be returned to the author with appropriate explanations. Phases 1 and 2 may take between two and four weeks, depending on the flow of manuscripts.
  3. Peer review: Manuscripts selected by the Associate Editor will be sent to a double-blind evaluation process by at least two external pairs rigorously selected from specialists in the area of study relevant to the contribution. When the author belongs to the Amazonia Campus of Universidad Nacional de Colombia or to the PPGAS of the Universidade Federal do Amazonas, reviewers external to his institution will evaluate the work. Otherwise, the evaluators may be internal or external to the two institutions. The evaluation process will be secret, no nominal information will be given in this respect and electronic manuscripts will be cleared of any personal information. The time given to reviewers to give a concept is four weeks. If there is a contradiction between the two evaluations, a third review may be carried out, according to the concept of the Associate Editor.
  4. Editorial decision: When the editor has the concepts of the reviewers, the authors will be notified of the editorial decision on the manuscript, which may be: Accepted with or without modifications, Resubmit for review, or Rejected. In case of being accepted with modifications, authors will be asked for a new version within a maximum period of twenty days. This new version must be accompanied by a communication addressed to the editor where the authors respond to each of the reviewers’ comments and justify the requested modifications that were not taken into account in the new version of the manuscript. The associate editor, together with the editor-in-chief, will make the final publication decision from the new version of the article, which will be notified to the author (s), indicating in which issue of the journal the article will be published. Phases two and three may take between six weeks and three months.
  5. Proofreading: Accepted collaborations will be submitted to style correction. The corrections made to the manuscripts will be sent to the authors for approval.
  6. Online publication: The publication will be subject to the availability of space in each issue. When the number of accepted manuscripts for an issue exceeds the space allocated to it, the Editorial Committee reserves the right to determine which of them are published in that issue or moved to another. Texts will be published online after proofreading in pdf and html format, before the printed version. Phases five and six may take between one and three months.
  7. Print publication: The corrected texts will be sent to layout for print and web publication (in pdf format). The layout proofs will be sent to the authors for approval.
