Con el copatrocinio del Instituto Nacional del Transporte INTRA y en el marco del Proyecto de Consumo, Conservación y Sustitución de Energía en el sector transporte, realizado conjuntamente por el Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte, el Ministerio de Minas y Energía, el Departamento Nacional de Planeación y la Organización de Estados Americanos - OEA, la Universidad Nacional de Colombia a través del Instituto de Ensayos e Investigación de la Facultad de Ingeniería desarrolló el estudio “Diseño Optimizado de un Vehículo Diésel de Pasajeros para Operación Urbana en Colombia”, comúnmente conocido como “Bus Tipo”. En una primera parte se analiza cuáles son las características predominantes en el transporte colectivo de pasajeros en las trece (13) principales ciudades colombianas teniendo en cuenta los aspectos del equipo, de la infraestructura y de la estructura o sistema de transporte; en la segunda parte se proponen soluciones para cada uno de los principales problemas encontrados en los aspectos considerados y en la tercera parte se hace la especificación de las principales características técnicas de tres (3) buses tipo o patrón en los tamaños mediano y grande de acuerdo con las normas internacionales. El estudio se complementa con un programa de mantenimiento y con cuatro (4) modelos matemáticos sobre comportamiento mecánico de los buses.
